Latin
The advantages of learning Latin are several. We outline
these for parents and prospective parents of students at the Academy.
-
Latin reveals a great deal about English and greatly
enhances the student's powers of expression in his native language.
-
About 80% of English vocabulary is derived from Latin
and Greek.
-
English vocabulary tests reveal that students of Latin
score higher than students who have not had Latin.
-
Latin greatly refines the student's understanding of
grammar-which reinforces the understanding of the grammar of the English
language.
-
Latin develops and deepens the student's understanding
of and the appreciation for literature.
-
A doorway is opened to great classical
literature-Virgil, for example.
-
The student's appreciation for English literature grows
because great English literature is filled which classical allusions,
and a student who understands those has a great advantage.
-
Latin trains the student in the essentials of scientific
method: observation, comparison, and generalization.
-
Students of Latin are equipped in a methodology of
rigorous analysis. This ability is not subsequently limited to Latin.
-
Latin trains minds to encounter unfamiliar material,
whether in science or any other discipline.
-
Latin provides a wonderful foundation for the study of
other modern languages.
-
Romance languages are direct "descendants" of Latin.
(Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, Portuguese, etc.)
-
Students are given a very good grasp on how inflected
language works. (German, Russian, Greek, etc.)
